Callan wins "Best Pensions Paper 2018 (North America)"
The winning and commended papers in this category are written by leading asset managers, consultants and research bodies.
Based on a survey of over 150 pension plan sponsors, Callan's 2018 DC Trends Survey examines a wide range of features relating to US companies' DC plans, including decision-making processes, investment policy statements, fees, the use of consultants, the selection of investments (including TDFs and company stock) and participant communication.

In this 14-page document, the PGIM authors examine the different approaches that DC plan sponsors might take in determining the investment menu available to plan participants. PGIM argues for what it calls an "Institutional Approach" (which maximises the potential of meeting sponsor objectives) rather than a "retail" or "simple" approach.
JP Morgan's "Guide to Retirement" is a valuable resource for plan sponsors. This 49-page chart book has four main sections, covering the retirement landscape, behaviors and best practices for retirement saving, the structuring of portfolios to meet desired outcomes, and considerations for the drawdown phase while living in retirement.
This report by Willis Towers Watson's Thinking Ahead Institute provides detailed analysis of the world's largest pension funds. The 46-page document provides a wide range of useful statistics relating to the value of assets, growth rates, asset allocation and regional comparisions. The report finishes with a list of the top 300 global pension funds, ranked by assets under management.

Aon presents an in-depth study of the retirement readiness of US employees, providing benchmarks that plan sponsors can use to measure the adequacy of their own pensions provision. The 35-page report provides insights into savings rates and income across the US, and presents retirement readiness statistics by generation, gender and industry. It comes with an associated document, "Real Deal Research," which discusses the research in more detail.
In this 32-page report, the Investment Company Institute examines a variety of issues around the provision of 401(k) plans, such as fees and expenses, fund trends, paying for 401(k) services and more.
