Do you have a "Brexit" strategy?

This week, UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced a date for the referendum vote on the UK’s membership of the European Union. Frenzied debate and a dramatic fall in sterling followed. The “Brexit” choice poses some serious questions for investors and the long-term health of the UK economy, particularly the City of London. Fluctuating opinion polls suggest that a vote to leave the EU is entirely possible, with UK bookmakers currently assigning a 30% probability to such an outcome. Here is our list of the latest “Brexit” research papers on Savvy Investor.

How do demographics impact asset prices and equity market valuations?

There are many factors driving asset prices and equity market valuations. Some influences are temporary - a political scare, a flurry of M&A activity or a technical rally. Some factors are driven by the business cycle, such as company earnings or bond yields. Other factors may be part of a secular trend, for instance the profit share of GDP, the level of stock buy-backs, or forces driving the asset allocation decisions of large institutions.

Hedge Fund Returns – survivorship bias and future return forecasts

Forecasting future hedge fund returns is difficult. It doesn’t help that investment professionals and academics can’t even agree over historic returns, given the problems of survivorship bias and backfill bias. “Survivorship bias” is the tendency for dead funds to be excluded from measures of historic performance. Failed funds have, on average exhibited much lower returns than surviving funds. Depending on which hedge fund studies you place most faith in, this means that historic hedge fund index returns are overstated by 3-8% pa. “Backfill bias” is similar, in that it will tend only to be successful hedge funds that join an index, at which point they will provide the index provider with data of their historic returns.
